Nepal takes a liking to UbiSlate 7+, books 20,000 units

Today is the last day of the ongoing, 6-day long, CAN Info-Tech 2012 Conference in Nepal, and among the many things, the visitors seem to have taken a liking to India's very own, Aakash tablet. The conference that started off on January 26, 2012, is the country's biggest technology exhibition, according to Hindustan Times and has been seeing a heavy inflow of visitors, who have been heading towards the stall B22 to see the low-cost tablet for themselves. An updated version of the Aakash tablet put on display at the conference, seemingly impressed them; so much so that reports have it that bookings for as many as 20,000 units of the UbiSlate 7+ tablet have been made, already. Clearly impressed, reports suggest that the tablet has managed to hit off very well with the masses, there. The tablet,  in Nepal is being priced at NRs 6,000, which translates to approximately Rs.3,750.

Creating a stir everywhere

In a quote carried by this report, Vivek Khetan of Gizmos Nepal, the sole distributors for Nepal, stated that, "We had a purchase order of around 10,000 units. But bookings at the exhibition and online have been over double that figure." Khetan further added that unlike in India, where the tablet has a niche buying section - students, professionals; the UbiSlate 7+ has found love from all quarters in Nepal, even in rural areas. Interestingly, a restaurant chain in Nepal have booked 1000 units of the UbiSlate 7+ tablet, further testifying just how popular this tablet now is. Reportedly, the better, upgraded version of the tablet, which features a better processor, a bigger battery, a newer version of Android, GPRS, Wi-Fi, HD video and over 1,50,000 applications, will cost Rs.750 more in Nepal.

News back home reveals that an upgraded Aakash, i.e. Aakash 2 is expected to reach college students, next month. Interestingly, while students will be able to enjoy the benefits of an upgraded device, they wouldn't have to pay anything extra.

Samsung Fails to Overturn Apple's German Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ban

Samsung Electronics Co. lost a bid to overturn a German sales ban on its Galaxy 10.1 tablet computers obtained by Apple Inc. in an intellectual property dispute.
The Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf backed the ban in a ruling today. While Apple can’t rely on a European Union design it used to win the sales ban, the order is justified under German competition rules, Presiding Judge Wilhelm Berneke said.
“Samsung wrongfully takes advantage of the enormous reputation and prestige of the iPad,” Berneke said. “Samsung unfairly imitates the iPad with its tablet.”
The legal battle between Cupertino, California-based Apple and its closest competitor in tablet computers is intensifying as an increasing number of consumers use devices such as tablets and smartphones to surf websites, play games and download music.
After the initial victory in Germany last year, Apple has faced several setbacks over the design issue. A Dutch appeals court ruled on Jan. 24 that Samsung can continue to sell the tablet in the Netherlands. Apple also lost similar rulings in Australia and California in December.
The court today said the sales ban also apples to the Galaxy 8.9., so a separate ruling on that device, requested by Apple, isn’t necessary.

How To Speed Up Your Windows XP

TIP

If like mine, your PC is getting slower and slower, there are a number of things you can do to speed it up. You will be surprised how much faster your computer gets after these steps, you won’t need to buy a new one. In addition to following the tips below, it’s a good idea to buy a trusted all-in-one PC optimizer. I would recommend FixCleaner, a Microsoft Certified all-in-one tool which optimizes your computer and hugely improves speed through a number of tasks, including:
  • cleaning the registry
  • removing errors
  • deleting junk files
  • downloading critical updates
  • improving browser speed
Please refer to the FixCleaner website at www.fixcleaner.com to see the full list of features. By using a PC maintenance program such as FixCleaner, you can save a load of money from buying a new computer.
Here is what you can do yourself to improve your Windows XP’s performance:

Step 1 : Remove unused software

You probably don’t use half the programs you have installed over time. Removing the ones you don’t need anymore can significantly speed up your Windows XP computer. To remove software:
  1. Go to the Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel) and select Add Or Remove Programs. It may take a while for the list to load if you have many programs installed.
  2. Going through the whole list, select programs you rarely use and uninstall them, one by one.
  3. Restart your computer to see the changes.

Step 2: Use Less GraphicsSpeed Up Your Windows XP - Disable graphics

Do you really need a wallpaper and the fancy animations when opening or closing windows? Disabling animations can increase the speed at which your computer opens and closes windows. To disable window animations:
  1. In Control Panel, go to System and select the Advanced tab. Click the Performance Settings tab.
  2. In the Visual Effects window, disable all the animations in the box, or simply select “Adjust for best performance” as shown on the screenshot on the right. Press Apply.
In the same Performance Options window, choose the Advanced tab, and press the Change button in the Virtual Memory area. From there you can change the size of your paging file – a file on your hard drive that acts as RAM. By increasing the size of your paging file, you can significantly increase speed, but be warnedUsing your hard drive as RAM can cause damage to it, so it’s a good idea to buy a better RAM instead.

Step 3: Clean your Registry

You should regularly clean your Windows XP’s Registry to remove old errors that can clog up the registry. To properly clean the Registry, you need a reliable Registry Cleaner software. There are some free ones out there, but I would not be too comfortable with using them. Instead, buy a trusted registry cleaner program so for a little bit of extra cash, you can feel safe. I would recommend FixCleaner, which in addition to cleaning your registry does a number of other things to significantly speed up your Windows XP.

Step 4: Stop unwanted Startup programs

By disabling programs that are set to automatically open when the computer starts, you can greatly speed up your startup process – the time between turning on the computer and being able to fully use it.
Here’s how to disable Startup programs:
  1. Click Run in your Start menu, type msconfig into the box and press enter.
  2. Select the Startup tab.
  3. Go through the list, disabling programs you don’t need by un-ticking the box left of them. Only disable programs you are sure you do not need, and I recommend not touching the ones in the WINDOWS directory.

Step 5: Clean up your hard drive

Performing a disk cleanup can free some hard drive space and also speed up your computer. To use the disk cleanup tool:
  1. Go to Start -> Run and type cleanmgr.exe. Press Enter.
  2. It will probably take a while, especially if you have never used this tool before.

Step 6: Defragment your hard drives

Defragmenting your drives can make a big difference in your computer’s speed. Defragmenting places files physically closer on the hard drive, making it easier and faster for the hard drive to read these files and write new ones. It is a good idea to defragment your hard drive regularily, so it alway stays optimal.
There are also a number of commercial defragment programs available, which are more powerful than the Windows tool and come with a wide variety of features. If you don’t want to spend any money on this, I would recommend Auslogics  Disk Defrag, which is a great, free tool.
Here’s how to defragment your hard drives using the built-in Windows tool:Defragment your hard drives - Windows XP tips & tricks
  1. In My Computer, right click on a drive you want to defragment.
  2. Click Tools and select Defragment
  3. Click the Analyse button first, which will analyse your hard drive and see how fragmented it is.
  4. Once the report is finished and the system finds it necessary to perform a defragmentation, press defrag. This will take a very long time, but you have to be patient.

Step 7: Use a PC optimization tool to do the rest

There are a hundreds of other ways to improve your computer’s speed and performance but it is impossible to list all of them here or go through them manually. To fix them, you can either purchase a separate tool for each one, which will end up costing you a fortune, or buy an All-In-One optimization program that will do all the dirty work and fix errors behind the scenes for you. Going through all the steps mentioned above will definitely speed up your Windows XP, but running a  professional tool even after following these manual steps will increase performance even further.
This is why I recommend that you purchase a trusted, reliable solution to fix computer problems for you. I recommend using FixCleaner, because it will fix all of the problems that you can’t manually, and save time on many by fixing them automatically.
FixCleaner has a clean, easy to use interface that lets you fix your PC’s problems even if you did not understand any of the procedures above. Unlike most other tools, FixCleaner is Microsoft Certified, which means that Microsoft has approved the software and that it is safe and reliable. You can download a free tool that will check your computer and produce a report on how much it can be optimized.

Facebook, Google and Microsoft join hands with Bank of America and Fidelity Investments to prevent spams

BOSTON: Some of the world's biggest Internet companies and financial services firms have developed a new approach to fighting email spam that they hope will reduce online scams.

Facebook, Google Inc and Microsoft Corp have joined with financial firms Bank of America CorpFidelity Investments and eBay Inc's PayPal to create a set of industry standards for preventing criminals from sending out spam emails that appear to come from corporate email addresses.

Fraudsters often pose as banks and other trusted firms in attempts to persuade email recipients to provide payment card numbers, bank account information and other personal data or click on links that infect computers with malicious software.

The new approach calls for email providers and businesses to attack spammers by coordinating on a massive scale the use of two existing technologies for email authentication known by the acronyms SPF and DKIM, which have yet to be widely adopted.

PayPal is one company that currently uses SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) technology standards to fight email spoofing, but only through partnerships with Yahoo Inc and Google, said Brett McDowell, a security manager at PayPal who serves as chairman of the group that developed the new standard.

The group goes by the name DMARC.org, which stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance.

If Yahoo or Google get an email claiming to come from PayPal that is not properly authenticated with SPF or DKIM, the email is not delivered, he said. But if fraudsters send spoofed PayPal email to other email providers, it might get through.

"What we need is an Internet standard that allows this level of protection to work at scale - without any discussion, without any partner agreements," McDowell said. "That is what DMARC does."

Other companies involved in the group include American Greetings Corp, LinkedIn Corp and Yahoo as well as privately held Agari, Cloudmark, eCert, Return Path and the Trusted Domain Project.

IDC security analyst Michael Versace said that the approach recommended by the group appeared to be effective and inexpensive to implement.

Yet he said that the industry should keep developing new technologies to fight spammers because he expects that cyber criminals will eventually figure out how to circumvent the DMARC protections.

Google instructs Android 4.0 developers to use Action Bar instead of menu button

Google Menu Button
Google has belted out certain instructions to developers of theAndroid 4.0 OS which state that they should employ the ActionBar in lieu of the standard menu button. Google has been taking the Ice Cream Sandwich platform quite seriously, intending to make it a sleek mobile OS as illustrated by this move and the recent launch of the Android Design website. The latter was set up to guide app developersin designing attractive and useful applications.
According to the official Android Developers blog, all Android platforms which came before the Honeycomb OS used a dedicated Menu button. However, along with the introduction of Android 3.0, the ActionBar made its debut, which had been developed to replace the menu tab. The company aims to eliminate the menu button as it wants to make the user interface crisper, cleaner and more consistent. The ActionBar are basically vertical columns that contain various user options, tools and apps which let device owners gain access to them in an easier and faster way.

As for developers who feel that the older versions of the Android OS may not support the ActionBar technology, the blog has revealed that merely a few more lines of code are required to activate it on most devices. Through this statement, Google encourages developers to stop thinking of creating interfaces with the menu button and actively work on integrating the ActionBar option instead.
The Android Developers blog has illustrated in detail the different ways in which Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS interface developers can incorporate the ActionBar.

Twitter's censor move with eye on China?
Twitter's censor move with eye on China?
Twitter, a hugely popular social networking site for microblogging, has said that "if required by the law" it can block tweets in a particular country.
NEW DELHI: Twitter, a hugely popular social networking site for microblogging, has said that "if required by the law" it can block tweets in a particular country. In a post titled 'Tweets Must Still Flow', Twitter, which has around 300 million users, wrote on its official blog, "Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country, while keeping it available in the rest of the world."

In the wake of the government's recent run-in with internet sites like Google, Yahoo! andFacebook over certain user-generated content, this was interpreted by many as Twitter's accommodation of a rising concern of several governments on the need to regulate user-generated content on social networking sites, and seen to be contrasting with the "stubborn" stand of Google and Facebook.

However, some experts wonder if Twitter's position was really different from that of Google or Facebook. "Google and Facebook have said that they would remove content if ordered by the courts, and Twitter too is saying that it can block tweets if required by the law," said an expert. "Where laws are codified, as in Germany and France about pro-Nazi propaganda, Twitter can block pro-Nazi tweets proactively. But in countries like India, where the laws are not that specific, this will be done reactively on the basis of court orders. That's all Twitter is saying."

In its blog post, Twitter said it has added the feature to block content depending on the region because it will enter "countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression." It cited the example of Germany and France: "Some countries differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content."

Twitter claimed if "we are required to withhold a tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld." It will also post detailed information about blocked content on the website of Chilling Effects, a joint project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and law departments of several leading US universities.

However, the move is most likely prompted by Twitter's alleged plan to enter China, a country with the highest number of internet users. The service is banned in the Asian country since 2009. With its new technology it might be able to block tweets that Chinese government deems offensive without raising the hackles of its global audience.

Twitter said that so far it has not used its new technology. "But if and when we are required to withhold a tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld," the company said.

Pranesh Prakash, a senior official with the Centre for Internet and Society, termed the move a step towards the "Balkanization of the web". "The region-specific blocking was already being used on video hosting websites like Youtube and Hulu, where due to the wishes of copyright owners many videos are not available in India. Twitter is extending this technology to its tweets," he said.

As governments seek some regulation of the web, the demand for region-specific content filtering and blocking has grown. Last month, asking Google and Facebook to filter "offensive material", telecom minister Kapil Sibal said, "We have to take care of the sensibilities of our people. Cultural ethos is very important to us."

Twitter became a household name in India last year as thousands of protesters used it to spread word about Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement. In countries like Egypt and Tunisia, it was used by protesters in their fight against oppressive regimes. Prakash added that in the past the website had resisted attempts to censor tweets. "Last year when the US government sought detailed information about a user, Twitter challenged them in a court," he said.

AP plans Rs1,500 tablet
to promote e-learning
HYDERABAD - The Andhra Pradesh government, as part of its initiatives to promote e-learning, is planning to provide “Aakash” Tablets to students at a subsidised price of Rs1,500.
The state government has sent a proposal to the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry in this regard. “Once we get the approval, we will implement the scheme. We are planning to procure 10,000 tablets. Initially, they will be made available to the students in the state universities, engineering and polytechnic colleges,” State Commissioner of Technical Education S Balasubramanyam said.
In the next phase, the scheme would be extended to the students of all private colleges in the state, the official said. The Union HRD Ministry is monitoring the implementation of Aakash project. Billed as the world’s cheapest tablet, “Aakash” was launched by the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal in October last year. The tablet has been designed, especially for students with an aim to bridge the “digital divide” between the rich and the poor.
Over the next five years, the Centre plans to provide the tablets to 200 million students. “The HRD Ministry had asked the state to submit details about the number of Aakash tablets initially required. We plan to procure 10,000 tablets in the beginning,” Balasubramanyam said. The state government is waiting for the next generation of “Aakash”, which is expected to be released in April.
The government also has plans of providing Aakash tablets on rent in college and university libraries for students who cannot afford to buy these tablets.
Aakash tablet, with a 7-inch touch screen and a weight of 350 grams, runs on Android operating system. There are reports that the existing Android 2.2 version operating system has a series of faults. There are also complaints regarding its poor battery back-up. Keeping this in view, the manufacturers of the tablet — DataWind — has decided to launch an improved version of Aakash with a 766 MHz processor and a longer battery life.
As on January 25 this year, over 2 millions online orders have been placed for the purchase of the world’s cheapest tablet.

Aakash tablets for Andhra students at Rs 1,500

Hyderabad, Jan 29 (TruthDive): Akash tablet that is originally priced at Rs 2,500 will now be available in Andhra Pradesh for just Rs 1,500. The state government is offering a subsidy of Rs 1,000 for students to facilitate e-learning.
A proposal has already been sent to the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry, the State Commissioner of Technical Education, S Balasubramanyam said.
S Balasubramanyam said, “The UMHRD has asked the state to submit details about the number of Aakash tablets initially required. We have proposed to provide the tablets to students in state universities, engineering and polytechnic colleges initially at a subsidised price of Rs 1,500. We plan to procure 10,000 tablets in the beginning.”
The second phase of the scheme will see students of private colleges.
The government has also plans of providing the tablets in college and university libraries, which will be available for rent for students who cannot afford them.
S. Balasubramanyam said it would take at least another 3-4 months to procure the 10,000 Aakash tablets from the Union HRD ministry as the state government was waiting for the next generation of Aakash, which is expected to be released in April.
The tablet has been designed especially for students with an aim to bridge the digital divide between the rich and the poor. Over the next five years, the Centre plans to provide the tablets to 20 crore students.
The Union HRD Ministry is monitoring implementation of the Aakash project.
Reports have been doing rounds that the existing Android 2.2 version operating system that runs on Aakash has a series of faults. Also, there is a problem with the battery back-up of the tablet. Owing to the complaints and the faults in the devices, the manufacturers of the tablet — DataWind — decided to launch an improved version of Aakash with a 766 MHz processor and a longer battery life.
